What price to register your second-hand car in 2022, depending on the region?

When you acquire a second-hand car (like a new one by the way, but this is an article “used question of the week!), you must, within a month, redo the gray card in your name. And this document, which serves as a title deed, is not free! The amount is calculated by multiplying the number of fiscal horses by the “regional registration tax”, which as its name suggests, is regional, and therefore has an amount that varies according to this.

And the differences are quite significant. Some regions bludgeon new buyers more than others! You will find in the table below the amounts for each region, and any exemptions depending on the type of vehicle.

Be aware, however, that regardless of the region, you must add a fixed tax of 11 euros, and a delivery charge of 2.76 euros, or 13.76 € in addition to the regional tax.

Finally, regardless of the region, the amount (of the regional share) is halved once the vehicle is over 10 years old.

* Note that the Grand-Est region is the only one in 2022 to have reduced the allowance for “so-called clean” cars to 0%.

Examples:

  • The amount for a 6 year old 7 CV diesel car in Normandy will be 7 x 35, plus €13.76, or €258.76.
  • The amount for a 12-year-old 5 CV hybrid car in Brittany will be (5 x 51)/2, i.e. €127.50, again divided by 2 because more than 10 years old, i.e. €63.75, plus €13.76 , i.e. in the end €77.51. The same car in Île-de-France will only pay €13.76 (100% reduction on the regional tax).
  • The amount for an electric car of 4 CV and 4 years will be 0 € plus 13.76 €, or… 13.76 €.

For imported occasions, it is sometimes necessary to pay an ecological malus during the first registration in France. It is calculated as follows: you have to find the possible penalty to which it would have been subject in France on the date of its entry into circulation, and you withdraw 10% per year elapsed. Example: a car from January 2017 subject to a penalty of €3,000 that year in France, will have to add €1,500 to the amount of the gray card (€3,000 – 50%) for an import in 2022. So after 10 years, no “malus” surcharge.
